DNA Iași Amends Charges Against Businessman Fănel Bogos, Investigated for Incitement to Corruption
DNA Iași has changed the legal classification for Fănel Bogos from purchase of influence to incitement to an offence assimilated to corruption. In the same case, PNL leaders are also accused, including ARF chairman Mihai Barbu.
Corruption case in Iași: Bogos now investigated for incitement, alongside PNL officials and government officials
Prosecutors at DNA Iași changed the legal classification in the case of businessman Fănel Bogos, administrator of Vanbet SRL, on Monday, according to Jurnalul.ro. Bogos, detained and arrested in November 2025 for purchase of influence, is now being investigated for incitement as provided for in Article 13 of Law 78/2000 — the intentional determination of a person to commit an offence assimilated to corruption. Bogos remains under judicial control.
DNA prosecutors informed Bogos of the new legal classification during the course of Monday, when local media noted his arrival at DNA Iași headquarters.
Mihai Barbu, ARF chairman, accused of abusing political influence
In the same case, several leaders of the National Liberal Party are officially listed. Among these is Mihai Barbu, chairman of PNL Vaslui and chairman of the Railway Reform Authority (ARF), accused of abusing influence or authority for the purpose of obtaining undue benefits.
DNA alleges that, from February 2025 to the present, Barbu would have exercised his political influence and authority to arrange meetings for Bogos with high-ranking state officials, with the director of the National Sanitary Veterinary Authority and for Food Safety (ANSVSA), and with various politicians.
"The accused Barbu Mihai would have promised the accused B.F. that he would make the director of the D.S.V.S.A. Vaslui cancel the measures taken by D.S.V.S.A. officials regarding irregularities found at the farms owned by his company or, if this is not possible, that he would take steps to remove that person from office," DNA states.
The purpose, according to the investigators, was to obtain for Bogos a sum of approximately 3,000,000 euros from the Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA) Vaslui, as a result of a damages claim filed by his company.
Cristina Trăilă, Deputy Secretary General of the Government, accused of complicity
A second prominent figure targeted in the case is Cristina Trăilă, Deputy Secretary General of the Government of Romania, accused of complicity in the abuse of influence or authority for the purpose of obtaining undue benefits.
Prosecutors argue that, in the period 3–4 November 2025, Trăilă would have supported Barbu's efforts to exercise influence over the ANSVSA president, for the purpose of replacing the DSVSA Vaslui director with a person acceptable to Bogos.
"The purpose pursued would have been to obtain undue benefits for the accused B.F. and for the company owned by him, consisting, among other things, of approval of a damages claim worth approximately 3 million euros, as well as in the reduction or cessation of sanitary-veterinary inspections at the company's farms," DNA prosecutors argue.
Origin of the case: chickens infected with Salmonella and pressure to remove a director
The investigation began with Mihai Ponea, director at DSVSA Vaslui, who would have discovered serious irregularities at Bogos's farms, including the sale of chickens infected with Salmonella. Dissatisfied with the sanctions applied, the businessman would have put pressure to remove Ponea from office.
DNA investigators indicate that Bogos used an extensive network of influence, which reached decision-makers at central administration and Victoria Palace. Among his contacts is Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, with whom Bogos would have met at Victoria Palace, according to Mediafax sources cited in the case.
