Two Moldovans sent to trial for drug trafficking with operations in four countries
Two Moldovan citizens, aged 51 and 36, have been sent to trial for the production and trafficking of drugs as part of a criminal group with operations in Czechia, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria.
First members of international drug network sent to court
Two citizens of the Republic of Moldova have been sent to trial for participation in a criminal group suspected of producing and trafficking drugs, according to Google News RO — Crime. The two men, aged 51 and 36 respectively, are the first members of the group to face court, according to an announcement from the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organised Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS).
During the investigation, a total of 16 people were detained, including in Czechia, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria. The group was dismantled with the support of Europol and Eurojust, according to prosecutors.
The two defendants had distinct roles in the group's activities. One was responsible for producing drugs in one of two laboratories identified on Moldovan territory, whilst the other dealt with transporting them. In the case of the man accused of transport, PCCOCS prosecutors contested the preventive measure, however he was placed under house arrest. The other man remains in state custody.
The operation was carried out in November 2025, following 18 searches conducted in Moldova, Czechia, Hungary and Romania. On Moldovan territory, 5 kilograms of methamphetamine, 40 kilograms of pills containing ephedrine, approximately 70 kilograms of chemical residues, and substances and chemical precursors which investigators claim could have been used to produce methamphetamine were seized. Equipment, two motor vehicles, electronic devices and sums of money were also confiscated.
In Hungary, authorities discovered a laboratory containing chemical substances and methamphetamine. In Czechia, one kilogram of methamphetamine and money which police claim came from the sale of drugs were confiscated.
According to investigators, the substances were hidden in specially constructed compartments in motor vehicles or in packages. The quantity transported in a single vehicle ranged between 3 and 8 kilograms. PCCOCS states that in this case, "drugs were seized without reaching consumers".
The Penal Code provides for drug trafficking under the circumstances identified by prosecutors a prison sentence of 7 to 15 years, to which is added deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or to engage in certain activities for a period of 2 to 5 years.
The two defendants benefit from the presumption of innocence until a final judgment is pronounced.
