Limerick man remanded in custody over Ennis stabbing on Tulla Road

Limerick man held on remand after three-stab attack at Ennis estate

A 24-year-old man from Limerick has been remanded in custody after appearing before Ennis District Court in connection with an alleged stabbing at a house on the Tulla Road in Ennis, TheJournal.ie reports.

Conor Madigan faces a charge of assault causing harm to Shane Redmond at Cluain Ros, Leamhan on Tuesday, 22 September. He is also charged with possession of a black kitchen knife at the same address on the same date, contrary to Section 9(4) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

Opposing bail, Garda Evan Moran told the court that it will be alleged Madigan stabbed Redmond three times in the back with a knife. After the third wound, Redmond reportedly felt only a minor sting. It is further alleged that Madigan then told the victim: "I have stabbed you three times bro, you might want to go to the hospital."

Redmond subsequently made a statement to gardaí from hospital alleging he was assaulted by Madigan. Garda Moran said CCTV footage places Madigan in the area at the time of the alleged offence.

Moran told the court that Madigan is currently of no fixed abode but had been staying with his girlfriend at the Cluain Ros Leamhan estate. He said gardaí believe there is a high probability that Madigan would attempt to interfere with the injured party if released on bail, and that no bail conditions would adequately address those concerns. Moran also noted that Madigan has addiction issues.

Solicitor Tara Godfrey, appearing for Madigan, argued that her client has stronger ties to Limerick than to Clare. She proposed that he sign on daily at Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick and remain out of County Clare as bail conditions. Godfrey added that Madigan has no prior history of violence and that this is his first charge relating to a violent offence.

On the question of his lack of a fixed address, Godfrey submitted that the High Court has previously ruled that the absence of a postal address should not in itself prevent an accused from obtaining bail. She also noted that the case was likely to proceed before the circuit court and that it would take time for the Director of Public Prosecutions to issue directions.

Judge Adrian Harris refused bail and remanded Madigan in custody. He is due to reappear before Ennis District Court on Friday via video link from prison.
