Man recaptured after escaping Newcastle West courthouse through bathroom window

A man escaped garda custody at Newcastle West District Court in Co Limerick by climbing through a bathroom window. He was re-arrested at his home around six hours later.

Fugitive recaptured at home after six-hour Limerick manhunt

A man who fled garda custody at Newcastle West District Court in Co Limerick has been re-arrested at his home approximately six hours after his escape, RTÉ News reports.

The man had been brought before the court to face an assault charge. After the court heard evidence of his arrest, charge and caution, gardaí discovered he was no longer present in the courtroom. He is understood to have requested to use the toilet facilities before escaping through a bathroom window.

A garda helicopter was deployed over west Limerick as part of the search operation. Gardaí stressed at the time that there was no danger to the public.

The man, believed to be in his 30s and from Limerick city, was located at his home, where he attempted a second escape by jumping through an upstairs window. He was arrested in the garden and returned to garda custody around 6pm.
