A 39-year-old man appeared in Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday charged with 13 offences following the hijacking of a passenger bus in County Tyrone on Saturday, ca.news.yahoo.com reports.

Daniel James Diver, of Brigade Terrace in Strabane, was a passenger on the Omagh to Derry bus when he produced a "large knife" and told the driver he wanted to take over the wheel. He instructed all passengers to disembark, but kept the driver on board to help him start the vehicle.

The 13 charges against Diver include kidnapping, hijacking, aggravated vehicle taking causing injury, possession of an offensive weapon — namely a knife — and possession of a class C drug, pregabalin tablets.

A police officer told the court that Diver had made "full admissions" during interviews and acknowledged that "his driving was dangerous and that he struck vehicles."

Police recorded the bus travelling at speeds exceeding 60mph. Multiple drivers were forced to take evasive action to avoid being struck. The bus collided with several cars, a road sign, a fence, and a wall in Strabane — the final impact bringing the vehicle to a standstill and allowing officers to remove Diver from the driver's seat and arrest him. One collision forced a car into a ditch.

There was no bail application. The judge ordered Diver to undergo a psychiatric assessment and directed him to appear again via video link at Strabane Court on 8 October.
