A 40-year-old man from Gillingham has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for sexually assaulting a child in a pub in Rainham.

A registered sex offender from Gillingham has been jailed after sexually assaulting a child who was briefly left alone in a pub in Rainham, kent.police.uk reports.

Adam Roche, 40, approached the child and spoke to them for a short time before touching them under their clothing. The child immediately reported the incident to a relative, who alerted police.

Roche was arrested the same day at his home address and subsequently charged with sexual assault. He pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court and on Wednesday 1 July was sentenced to 1 year and 2 months' imprisonment. He will also be subject to a Community Order for 2 years, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a Restraining Order, both lasting 8 years.

Detective Constable Nathan Hales, the investigating officer, said Roche had "seen his opportunity to take advantage of a vulnerable child" while they sat alone.

"His actions for his own gratification were appalling," Hales said, adding that attending officers were quick to track Roche down at his home address.

Hales also commended the young victim, who "whilst distressed by their ordeal, was quick to raise the alarm and ensure this man was brought justice."
