Hate Crime Charges After Violent Racial Attack at Kingston Gas Station

A Black man was left with severe injuries, including a suspected compound fracture, following a racially motivated attack at a Cumberland Farms gas station in Kingston, Massachusetts, according to cair.com.

Law enforcement authorities identified the suspect as Gary Phillipo II, 46, of Carver. According to police, Phillipo began shouting unprovoked anti-Black racial slurs at the victim while he was at the fuel pumps. Phillipo then allegedly charged at the victim, knocking him to the ground and repeatedly kicking and striking him. Surveillance footage and witness statements corroborated the victim's account.

Officers reported that Phillipo continued to shout racial slurs in the presence of police and hospital staff after his arrest. Hate crime charges have since been filed against him.

The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA) condemned the attack and welcomed the hate crime charges. Executive Director Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, Esq., said in a statement: "We strongly condemn this alleged racist attack. No one should ever have to fear for their safety or be subjected to brutal violence simply while going about their daily routine."

Amatul-Wadud also called for accountability: "We thank the Kingston Police Department for pursuing hate crime charges, and we demand that justice be served to the fullest extent of the law to send a clear message that hate-fueled violence will never be tolerated in Massachusetts."

CAIR-MA is a chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, described as the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation.
