Police in Murfreesboro, Tennessee shot a man on 11 September after he charged at officers with a hatchet during a warrant service at a hotel.

The Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) has released still images from body-worn camera footage showing a man charging at officers with a hatchet before he was shot, wsmv.com reports.

Officers responded to the Clarion Inn & Suites on Friday, 11 September, just before 7 p.m. to serve a warrant. The man they were seeking refused to leave his hotel room. He eventually opened the door and advanced on the officers while brandishing a hatchet, police said. He was shot several times.

Officers immediately administered first aid until Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived and assumed medical care. The man was transported to hospital and was reported in stable condition on the evening of the incident.

No officers or hotel guests sustained injuries. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

"At the request of District Attorney General Jennings Jones, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation," MPD said in a statement.
