Detroit Woman Charged with Human Trafficking in Southfield After Victim Alerts Housekeeper

A 27-year-old Detroit woman faces human trafficking and prostitution charges after a victim sought help from a motel housekeeper in Southfield, Michigan.

A Detroit woman has been charged with operating a human trafficking enterprise in Southfield after an alleged victim flagged down a motel housekeeper for help, clickondetroit.com reports.

Janeice Florence Robinson, 27, is accused of luring the victim into prostitution after the woman travelled from Alabama to Michigan in April seeking employment. According to prosecutors, Robinson required the victim to perform sex acts with multiple men each day.

On 10 September, the victim approached a housekeeper at the Marvins Garden Inn on Northwestern Highway in Southfield and disclosed that she had been trafficked and needed assistance. She told staff she had been staying with a man she feared and requested transport to a hospital. The housekeeper immediately contacted police.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald publicly praised the housekeeper's response, describing her as a "hero."

"Trafficking victims are in our communities and often need help escaping their traffickers," McDonald said in a news release on Tuesday. "Simple actions, such as calling the police when something looks suspicious or asking someone if they need help, can save a victim."

Robinson was arrested and faces four charges: one count of operating a human trafficking enterprise, carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and/or a $15,000 fine; one count of prostitution — transporting; one count of prostitution — accepting earnings; and one count of prostitution — pandering, each punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Her bond was set at $100,000 cash/surety.
