Keaau resident faces murder charge following fatal shooting in Hawaiian Paradise Park

Hawaiʻi Island police have charged 49-year-old Bryant Scott Guevarra of Keaʻau with second-degree murder and additional offences following a fatal shooting on Saturday, 19 September 2026, according to hawaiipolice.gov.

The incident took place at 10:18 p.m. in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision, on the 15-1500 block of Makuʻu Drive in Keaʻau. Puna patrol officers were dispatched after a man called to report he had been attacked and had shot another person.

Officers arriving on scene found 41-year-old Jose Adame Romero of Keaʻau suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving measures by officers and Hawaiʻi Fire Department personnel, Romero was pronounced deceased at 10:44 p.m.

Guevarra, identified as the caller, was arrested at the scene and taken to the East Hawai'i Detention Facility. Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continued their investigation over the following days.

On Monday afternoon, 21 September, police formally charged Guevarra after consulting with the Hawaiʻi County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney. His bail was set at $1,823,000, and he is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Thursday, 24 September, at Hilo District Court.
