Man shot by police in Portland, Maine after killing 69-year-old in apartment

Portland police shot a suspect Monday night after he allegedly killed a man during a disturbance at an apartment on Colonial Road. The victim, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Portland, Maine police shot and wounded a man Monday evening who is accused of murdering another man inside an apartment, wabi.tv reports.

Officers were dispatched to 27 Colonial Road at approximately 8:16 p.m. following a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, a tenant led them into the building before turning and running back toward the officers, screaming.

Officers Joseph Lowe and David Moore entered the apartment, where they found Brian Oliver, 41, of Portland, assaulting 69-year-old Mark Tschamler. Police say Oliver refused to drop his weapon and was subsequently shot. Tschamler was pronounced dead at the scene.

As of Tuesday morning, Oliver was receiving treatment at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland. He remains in custody and will face a murder charge.

Officers Lowe and Moore have been placed on administrative leave, standard procedure following any incident involving deadly force by police. The Maine Office of the Attorney General will conduct an independent investigation into the use of force.
