Ohio man steals police cruiser, crashes into home after homicide chase

A suspect in a homicide and aggravated robbery led Dayton police on a high-speed chase before crashing a stolen cruiser into a house. Seven officers were injured.

A man already wanted in connection with a homicide stole a Dayton police cruiser during a chaotic overnight chase on September 3 and drove it head-on into a residential home, the Dayton Police Department confirmed, as reported by Toronto Sun Crime.

Dashcam footage released by the department captured the sequence of events, which began when a stolen Toyota SUV sped through an active crash scene at an intersection late at night. The vehicle clipped a raised centre median and knocked down a street sign before officers moved to intercept it.

Officers followed the Toyota down a residential street, with one officer radioing, "There's too many cars here." A cruiser then performed a PIT manoeuvre, causing the SUV to spin out. The driver fled on foot into a backyard, with four officers in pursuit.

Within moments, the man had doubled back to the street — out of camera view — and climbed into an unoccupied police cruiser. Bodycam footage showed officers pointing their weapons at him and ordering him to exit the vehicle. He did not comply.

The stolen cruiser struck another police vehicle while pulling away, then accelerated down the street before crashing head-on into a house, punching a large hole through the exterior wall.

Video from the stolen cruiser's own dashcam recorded the final moments of the chase from inside the vehicle.

Once the suspect was taken into custody, officers were seen checking on the home's two occupants, who were audibly shaken by the impact. Both residents were transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Seven officers sustained injuries during the arrest.

Dayton police subsequently determined that the arrested man was also a suspect in a homicide in a neighbouring town and faced aggravated robbery charges tied to the Toyota SUV in Moraine, Ohio. Authorities said he had accumulated charges across multiple jurisdictions in the region.
