A 15-year-old boy is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting at two Durham police officers on Monday afternoon, abc11.com reports. The incident took place just before 4:30 p.m. on Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard in North Carolina.

Officers had responded to a reported larceny and attempted to detain the teenager. A physical struggle broke out, during which the youth drew a firearm and discharged two rounds at the officers. Police were able to disarm him and take him into custody without serious injury to anyone at the scene.

Durham Mayor Leo Williams attended the scene alongside newly sworn-in police chief Stephanie Mardis. Williams issued a statement noting: "While no one was seriously injured, this extremely close call is a reminder that reducing gun violence requires our young people having access to jobs with decent wages, housing that is accessible and attainable, and a supportive community that doesn't politicize these real-life issues."

On Tuesday, Chief Mardis released her own statement: "I'm thankful no one was seriously injured, and I want to recognize the officers involved for their rapid response in safely disarming the individual and preventing additional harm to bystanders. Our investigators are working to gather all available information, including witness statements and video evidence."
