A homicide investigation is underway in Portland, Oregon, after an adult woman was found dead inside an apartment on the 600 block of NW 18th Avenue, katu.com reports.

Officers responded just after 12:30 p.m. to a report of a possible assault at the location. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the woman dead inside the unit. The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

The suspect or suspects had left the scene before police arrived. No arrests were made immediately.

A resident of the building, Josh Erdman, told katu.com he believed he heard gunshots shortly before the commotion. "I heard pew pews, what I heard from a silencer is what it sounded like, and I heard nothing ever since then, and people have been frantic all around my floor, and they're just trying to keep me to stay in my unit," he said.

The Portland Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene to lead the investigation.
