Alexander Burgos Matos extradited from Indiana to Virgin Islands on rape and child abuse charges

A man arrested in Indiana last month has been extradited to the Virgin Islands to face charges of aggravated rape, aggravated child abuse, and unlawful sexual contact.

A man wanted on a Virgin Islands warrant for aggravated rape, aggravated child abuse, and unlawful sexual contact has been extradited to the territory after being arrested in northern Indiana, viconsortium.com reports.

Alexander Burgos Matos arrived back in the Virgin Islands on Monday, following his arrest on Aug. 24 in Bluffton, Indiana. The warrant against him was issued Sept. 9, 2025, by Virgin Islands authorities.

The V.I. Police Department had requested assistance from the Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force on Aug. 21 to locate and apprehend Burgos Matos. U.S. Marshals in the Virgin Islands subsequently developed information placing him in Bluffton and coordinated with their counterparts in the Northern District of Indiana.

Authorities confirmed that Burgos Matos was on active probation in Indiana at the time. He was taken into custody without incident on Aug. 24 at the Allen County Adult Probation Department and held at the Allen County Jail pending extradition.

U.S. Marshal for the District of the Virgin Islands Kwesi R. Howard said the case illustrated the range of the federal fugitive task force network. "Persons who believe they can evade the law should think again," Howard said. "The U.S. Marshals Service will find you, and we will hold you accountable. There is no safe haven for those who refuse to comply with the law."

Howard added that federal and territorial agencies would continue working together "to protect the people of the Virgin Islands, especially our most vulnerable."

The U.S. Marshals Service did not release further details on the underlying allegations or Burgos Matos' next scheduled court appearance.
