Sex crime suspect extradited from Indiana to face charges in the Virgin Islands

Alexander Burgos Matos, wanted on V.I. warrants for rape and child abuse, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Indiana and returned to the Virgin Islands Monday.

Indiana fugitive returned to Virgin Islands on sex crime warrants

A man apprehended in northern Indiana last month arrived back in the Virgin Islands on Monday to face charges of unlawful sexual contact, aggravated rape, and aggravated child abuse, stthomassource.com reports.

Alexander Burgos Matos was the subject of an outstanding Virgin Islands warrant issued Sept. 9, 2025. U.S. Marshals arrested him on Aug. 24 without incident at the Allen County Adult Probation Department in Allen County, Indiana, where he was on active probation.

The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) had requested assistance from the Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force on Aug. 21 to locate Burgos Matos. Deputies developed a lead placing him in Bluffton, Indiana, and contacted U.S. Marshals in the Northern District of Indiana to confirm his whereabouts and probation status.

Following his arrest, Burgos Matos was held at the Allen County Jail pending extradition proceedings before being transferred to the Virgin Islands.

"Persons who believe they can evade the law should think again," said Kwesi R. Howard, U.S. Marshal for the District of the Virgin Islands. "The U.S. Marshals Service will find you, and we will hold you accountable. There is no safe haven for those who refuse to comply with the law. Together with our federal and territorial law enforcement partners, we will remain relentless in our efforts to protect the people of the Virgin Islands, especially our most vulnerable."

The U.S. Marshals Service has coordinated fugitive apprehension operations with local, state, and federal agencies since the 1980s.
