Saskatoon rail safety check leads to arrest of two Canada-wide wanted suspects

A Rail Safety Week enforcement stop in Saskatoon on Sept. 22 led to the arrest of a man and woman both wanted Canada-wide on multiple charges.

Two Canada-wide wanted suspects arrested during Saskatoon rail safety enforcement

A routine Rail Safety Week traffic stop in Saskatoon on September 22 resulted in the arrest of two people wanted across Canada, ctvnews.ca reports.

At around 3:30 p.m., near Avenue W South and 11th Street, an automated licence plate reader alerted Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) officers to a vehicle whose registered owner had a suspended licence. Officers conducted a traffic stop and discovered both passengers were wanted Canada-wide.

The first, a 27-year-old man, was wanted out of Vancouver on charges of assault, robbery and theft under $5,000. The second, a 23-year-old woman, was unlawfully at large out of Regina and wanted Canada-wide for breach of statutory release. Both were arrested and ticketed for failing to wear a seatbelt. The woman also faces several additional new charges.

A search of the vehicle turned up bear spray, a collapsible baton and unopened alcohol.

Investigators subsequently connected the pair to a separate theft call made shortly before the traffic stop, in which multiple bottles of alcohol were stolen from a nearby business. Video evidence identified the two arrested individuals as the thieves, and both were charged with an additional count of theft under $5,000.

Rail Safety Week runs September 21–27. Operation Lifesaver Canada states the initiative aims to raise awareness and reduce railway crossing and trespassing incidents nationwide.
