Cypriot law enforcement has warned residents about a fresh phone scam in which fraudsters pose as cybercrime detectives to obtain banking information.

A fresh wave of telephone scams targeting residents of Cyprus prompted law enforcement to issue an alert on Thursday. Investigators say swindlers are dialling locals while posing as representatives of the island’s cybercrime squad in an effort to obtain financial records.

The Cyprus Mail reports that the deception has already generated numerous reports from recipients of these unsolicited calls. The perpetrators display domestic landline prefixes, yet the signals are likely channelled from outside the country and masked.

Posing as detectives, the callers allege that the person on the other end has already been defrauded online. Under the pretence of probing that incident, they demand confidential material such as account numbers and other banking credentials.

Members of the public are told to treat these approaches with extreme scepticism and to hang up rather than share anything. Those who have already disclosed information must reach out to their financial institution straight away to freeze any pending illicit transfers.

The force emphasised that genuine officers do not ring citizens out of the blue to request private or monetary information.
