Three people were injured in a knife attack at Winterthur railway station. Police arrested the alleged perpetrator at the scene. Investigators are continuing to clarify the motive behind the incident.
The incident occurred in the early morning at approximately 8.30 a.m. in the area of the railway station in Winterthur, a city located approximately 25 kilometres north-east of Zurich. According to Swiss newspaper Blick, a 31-year-old man attacked several passers-by with a knife and injured three people.
Police confirmed that the three injured victims, aged 28, 43 and 52, were taken to hospital. One person sustained severe injuries whilst the other two suffered moderate injuries. Officers arrested a 31-year-old Swiss national at the scene.
An eyewitness working in a nearby building told Blick that the man had shouted "Allahu Akbar" before the attack. At the time of the attack, a group of first-year schoolchildren were also in the vicinity of the station. Their teacher positioned himself protectively in front of the children.
Turhan Muslu, a 65-year-old taxi driver who happened to be at the location, described the attack: "I saw him running and trying to stab a man. The passer-by defended himself with all his strength. Eventually the security service arrived and overpowered the man. Everything happened incredibly quickly. If the security forces had not reacted so quickly, I do not know what would have happened."
Police investigations are ongoing. The motive of the attacker remains unclear to date.
