A judge in Medellín overseeing protective guarantees decreed pre-trial detention in a penitentiary for three individuals under investigation for the murder of two police officers that occurred on 5 June in the Laureles neighbourhood.

Among those detained is an officer in active service, Jhon Alexander López Villada, along with two persons without institutional links: Cipriano Alonso Carrasquilla Parra and Óscar Manuel Villegas García. The deceased were Yuli Giraldo Morales, aged 38, and John Alexander Zapata Vásquez, aged 26, both members of the Sijín.

According to the fiscal investigation, the agents were verifying a vehicle reported as stolen when they were attacked on Friday night in the Lorena sector, Comuna 11.

The main investigative theory indicates that the officer López Villada allegedly mistook his colleagues for criminals engaged in vehicle theft, allegedly firing against officer Zapata, who fell wounded.

According to the narrative of events, Carrasquilla Parra allegedly took possession of the service weapon of the fallen agent and pursued sub-inspector Giraldo to kill her. Both police officers were taken to a clinic but did not survive.

The investigation determined that Villegas García was in possession of the service weapon of one of the fallen officers at the moment the authorities arrived at the scene.

The prosecution filed charges of aggravated homicide against the officer. The two civilians were attributed the same crime plus illegal possession of weapons. The three refrained from accepting responsibility.

The incident caused consternation in the city because the victims were Sijín investigators and among those arrested is a member of the police force. Since the day of the incident, judicial proceedings have been carried out, security camera recordings have been reviewed, and statements have been collected to determine exactly what occurred.
