An officer of the Policía Nacional Revolucionaria (PNR) was found dead on Friday morning in the town of Caibarién, located in the north-central province of Villa Clara. The victim was Captain Leonel Mesa Rodríguez, 62 years old, who held the position of sector chief.
According to a report by Tribuna de La Habana, the body was discovered in the Consejo Popular La Reforma. The officer had six stab wounds and one gunshot wound to the head. The precise time of the killing has not yet been reported.
Preliminary information indicates that the police officer was travelling on his official motorcycle, equipped with all standard gear, on the route between Remedio and Caibarién. The motorcycle was found near the body.
The Ministry of the Interior (MININT) stated that Villa Clara's security forces are investigating the motives and circumstances of the case, expanding on the initial evidence obtained. In its statement, the ministry warned that acts of this nature "will always meet with the forceful response of revolutionary law" and that the population will not accept "impunity nor encouragement of violence".
Mesa Rodríguez had accumulated nearly 24 years of service in the police force. MININT remembered him as an official who remained "on the front line of the fight against crime" and as a "faithful defender of internal order". The institution extended its condolences to the officer's relatives and colleagues.
