Electricity fraud in Havana: court sentences officials and customers from Plaza de la Revolución
The Provincial Court of Havana sentenced seven employees of the Electricity Company and fourteen customers for manipulating energy consumption records.
Sentences of up to eight years for manipulation of electricity records in Havana
A public oral trial before the Provincial Court of Havana concluded with convictions against seven employees of the Electricity Company and fourteen residential customers from the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, according to granma.cu.
The defendants faced charges of falsification of bank and commercial documents, as well as continued bribery. The mechanism of the fraud consisted of altering records within the Integrated Automated Commercial Management System to artificially reduce the declared consumption of customers with high energy expenditure.
Among those implicated were the provincial administrator of the system, the company's IT specialist, staff from the Commercial Office of Plaza de la Revolución, inspectors and meter readers-collectors.
The court imposed sentences of six to eight years of deprivation of liberty on the main perpetrators. The beneficiary customers and other minor participants received economic sanctions and administrative fines, graduated according to their degree of participation in the scheme.
