A court in the Cuban capital imposed prison sentences on a woman and her partner after finding them guilty of mistreating and abusing four minors, all children of the accused. The sentence was handed down on 29 September 2025 in the Municipal People's Court of Arroyo Naranjo, in case number 84 of that year.
According to information published by the Havana Citizen Portal, the defendant Daima Rodríguez Núñez was the biological mother and legal guardian of four girls aged ten, seven, four and one year. The three oldest attended special educational centres due to diminished cognitive capacity.
During the trial it was established that the woman systematically failed to fulfil her care obligations. She did not take her daughters to school for extended periods, did not provide them with adequate food despite receiving assistance from the local government for that purpose, and failed to take them to the doctor when they needed medical attention. Additionally, she frequently abandoned the home and left the small children alone for hours, even at night and in the early morning.
On repeated occasions, the mother and her partner, Carlos Díaz González, forced the girls to go out on the streets at any time to beg for food and money from neighbours and strangers. The cash obtained was spent by both of them on alcoholic drinks.
Taking advantage of the situation of abandonment, Díaz González began to touch the genitals of one of the seven-year-old daughters over her clothing, a behaviour which the mother tolerated.
The court found Rodríguez Núñez guilty of corruption of minors and acts contrary to the normal development of the minor, imposing eight years of deprivation of liberty on her. Díaz González was sentenced to ten years for corruption of minors and indecent assault.
As accessory measures, the woman was suspended of her parental rights over her daughters. Both defendants were subjected to deprivation of rights and prohibition from leaving the country. The accused and the prosecution may lodge an appeal before the superior court.
