Five Swedish men in their twenties were arrested on Friday in Paphos, Cyprus, suspected of preparing to murder a British twin couple. This is reported by Dagens Nyheter, citing the Cypriot news website Philenews.
The men were in a car when police carried out a planned raid. During the arrest, a pistol, two knives and gloves were seized from the vehicle. A house search yielded further evidence in the form of notes, documents and 1,400 dollars in cash.
Police suspect that the five are part of an international criminal group linked to a murder plot that was uncovered in Cyprus the previous weekend. Two Norwegians and an Irishman were then arrested, suspected of hiring a Danish man to kill British twin brothers who planned to visit the island.
The Danish man was in fact a police officer working undercover. He was contacted via Signal and offered 650,000 Danish kronor for the task. The Irishman and the Norwegians purchased a plane ticket for him and are also suspected of obtaining a motorcycle and a weapon intended for the double murder.
Before the Danish officer travelled to Cyprus, Danish authorities alerted Europol.
Police have not yet specified the exact role of the five Swedish men in the plot. Dagens Nyheter reports that it has sought Europol and the Swedish Foreign Ministry for comment.
