18-year-old Swedish man arrested over 23 counterfeit €50 notes in Ayia Napa
An 18-year-old Swedish tourist has been arrested in Famagusta with 23 counterfeit €50 notes. The District Court has ordered his three-day detention.
Three-day detention for 18-year-old Swede with counterfeit €50 notes in Ayia Napa
An 18-year-old Swedish tourist arrested in Famagusta district on charges of possession and circulation of counterfeit banknotes has been placed in three-day detention, according to Philenews. The Famagusta District Court, before which the young man was presented, issued a three-day detention order.
The 18-year-old was in Ayia Napa for a short holiday with his family. He has so far refused to cooperate with authorities, whilst police are investigating whether he brought the counterfeit notes from Sweden.
The case began when members of the Famagusta division of the Police investigated information and went to a premises, where they received two €50 notes from an employee bearing identical serial numbers. The subsequent examinations produced evidence against the 18-year-old.
During a body search carried out following his detection, two further €50 notes were found in his possession, bearing the same serial number as the previous ones. The four notes were seized as evidence and the young man was arrested in flagrante delicto.
Subsequently, a search of the hotel room where he was staying yielded a further 19 €50 notes bearing the same serial number. In total, 23 €50 notes with a total nominal value of €1,150 were seized.
The investigation by the Famagusta division of the Police continues, with authorities seeking to establish, amongst other things, the source of the counterfeit notes.
