On Sunday morning, the control centre received an emergency call from Anhalt-Bitterfeld district. Rescue crews were called to the joint municipality of Osternienburger Land, where they found the critically injured child. Following emergency medical treatment, a helicopter flew the child to a hospital.
From Sunday onwards, doctors fought to save the child's life. However, on Tuesday evening, the child succumbed to the injuries. The treating physicians quickly established that the injuries could not have been caused by an accident.
Police are treating the case as serious abuse. On Sunday evening, the public prosecutor's office ordered a search of the 27-year-old's flat. Specialists from the state criminal investigation office secured evidence. Shortly afterwards, police officers arrested the suspect.
The Dessau-Roßlau public prosecutor's office requested custody pending trial, which a judge at the Köthen district court approved. The exact circumstances of the offence remain unclear and are the subject of ongoing investigations.
