The airport spokesman refused to provide further details about the cause of the alarm. Such evacuations are typically triggered when suspicious objects are discovered in the controlled area.
Persons already in the aircraft cabins were required to disembark and begin the security procedure from the beginning. The operation caused delays of up to three hours, which were visible on the information displays in the terminal.
Federal police clarified that the restriction applied only to the zone behind the security filters; the remainder of the building remained open. Specialists are currently investigating the area to determine whether a genuine threat exists. An estimated time for the resumption of normal operations was not provided.
Against the backdrop of this situation, the airport operates at maximum capacity during the main travel season and records almost 15 million passengers per year. Any temporary suspension of operations caused chain reactions at European level: missed connections, aircraft blocked on other runways, and immobilised crews.
Coincidence or not, in the same period, German armed forces are conducting exercises with six Tornado fighter jets on the Helmut Schmidt civilian runway, between 9:00 and 18:00 hours, parallel to commercial flights.
