According to El País, Internal Affairs inspectors suspect that these uniformed officers were collaborating, directly or indirectly, with gangs that introduce and distribute prohibited substances in the region. The focus of the enquiry points especially towards the gang known as the Pikikis, an organisation with roots in Linares and an extensive criminal record for offences against public health.
The arrests were carried out during the morning of Wednesday in a coordinated operation. Whilst some teams searched homes in the Arrayanes neighbourhood, others searched internal facilities at the police station itself. The objective was to gather evidence that would help clarify whether the officers were facilitating information, protection or any other form of assistance to the traffickers.
The operation has generated considerable attention in the city, where the presence of groups engaged in drug trafficking is a persistent problem.
