Raúl Asencio convicted of drink-driving in Gran Canaria and before court over sexual video
The Real Madrid defender faces two judicial cases: a fine of €14,400 and eight months without a licence for high alcohol levels, and trial for distribution of an intimate video without consent.
Two legal fronts for the Real Madrid centre-back
Centre-back Raúl Asencio, 23, is going through one of his worst periods since joining Real Madrid's first team. According to La Vanguardia, the Canarian player simultaneously faces a final conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol and a trial for distributing a sexual video without consent recorded in 2023.
Detained with alcohol levels four times the legal limit
In the early hours of 16 August, the Traffic Civil Guard intercepted Asencio at the wheel of his Porsche Macan GTS on the GC-1 motorway in southern Gran Canaria at 6:30 a.m. Two breathalyser tests produced readings of 0.90 and 0.88 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air, figures that nearly quadruple the legal limit of 0.25 mg/l. Above 0.60 mg/l, the infraction ceases to be administrative and constitutes an offence against road safety.
On 19 August, at the Investigation Section of the Court of First Instance of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the footballer admitted the facts in a fast-track trial, accepted the penalty requested by the Public Prosecutor and expressed remorse. The sentence imposed a fine of €14,400 and suspension of his driving licence for eight months. The person accompanying him that morning, who was fit to drive, took charge of the vehicle after the checkpoint.
The penalty table of the General Traffic Authority provides for sentences of between three and six months in prison, or a fine of six to twelve months, or community service of 31 to 90 days, in addition to driving licence withdrawal of one to four years for those exceeding that level. The conviction imposed therefore lies at the lightest end of the applicable sentencing framework.
Trial for distribution of intimate images without consent
On the same day the drink-driving conviction came to light, Asencio appeared before the Criminal Court number 5 in Las Palmas to answer for the distribution of a sexual video recorded in the summer of 2023. The images were distributed by three former companions from Real Madrid's youth academy—Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodríguez and Andrés García—without the consent of the two young women appearing in them, one of whom was a minor at the time of the facts.
Asencio faces no criminal liability for having apologised privately to the victims and having compensated them, who in turn withdrew the private prosecution against him. The Public Prosecutor had initially requested two years and six months in prison, a fine of €73,000 and compensation of €10,000. The defender expects to be acquitted of the two offences against privacy once the two young women ratify before the judge the forgiveness granted.
The three youth academy players accused of distribution of child pornography
The situation of Ruiz, Rodríguez and García is considerably more serious. With a minor among the victims, the Public Prosecutor's Office accuses them of distribution of child pornography, an offence for which Spanish legislation does not permit the victim's forgiveness to extinguish criminal liability. Each of the three accused faces a sentence of four years and seven months in prison.
A season start marked by inactivity and legal problems
Asencio, trained in Real Madrid's youth academy, arrives at this moment also sidelined from training due to a muscular injury he has been carrying since July. The club's manager, José Mourinho, has not counted on him to date, which places the player in a position of maximum vulnerability both sportively and personally as the new era on the Real Madrid bench begins.
