Spain's National Police detained a man on Thursday morning in connection with serious public disorder offences recorded before the match between Valencia CF and FC Barcelona at Mestalla on 23 May, according to superdeporte.es.

On that day, following the passage of the local team's bus along Avenida de Suècia, a large group of supporters lit flares and began attacking officers, throwing street furniture and glass bottles at them. One of the police officers was injured in the arm as a direct consequence of the projectiles.

The disturbances generated serious breach of public order that endangered both the physical integrity of the deployed officers and that of the supporters present, causing running, pushing and falls, according to the police statement.

The detainee was identified as one of the most active participants in the altercations. In addition to actively throwing objects and chairs, he hurled insults and encouraged younger individuals to attack police officers, contributing to an escalation in tension and violence, the statement adds.

Agents from the Provincial Information Brigade assumed responsibility for the investigation to clarify the facts and identify those responsible. The investigative work resulted in the arrest of the man, charged as the alleged perpetrator of the offences of public disorder and assault on law enforcement officers.

The arrestee also had previous sanctions for breaches covered under Law 19/2007 against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport.

The investigation remains open and Spain's National Police do not rule out further arrests. The match in question was from matchday 38 of LaLiga EA Sports, the final day of the championship, and was settled with a 3–1 victory for Valencia CF.
