Third jewellery robbery in a week in Madrid: employee injured and thieves flee with haul
The National Police are investigating a new robbery at a jewellery shop in the La Latina neighbourhood, the third in seven days in the capital. An employee was injured in the head after struggling with the attackers.
Assault in La Latina: fake gun, employee injured and unquantified haul
The National Police are searching for a pair of suspects who on Friday afternoon robbed a jewellery shop at 85 Calle de Toledo, in the La Latina neighbourhood, according to information obtained by ABC. The alert reached the 091 emergency control room at 17:55 hours.
A man and a woman reportedly entered the shop carrying a weapon that they later abandoned at the scene. Specialists from the Provincial Brigade of Scientific Police determined that it was a fake gun, not modified to fire.
The woman who runs the shop struggled with the attackers and received a blow from the fake weapon. Emergency services treated her at the scene; she had a bleeding wound to the head. The thieves managed to flee with the haul, the value of which has yet to be determined. It is unknown whether they had outside assistance from a vehicle, something common in this type of assault.
The robbery occurs in the context of a series of robberies at jewellery shops and gold dealing stores in the region. Last Friday there was a robbery at a gold dealing shop in Torrejón de Ardoz. On Monday 18 May, a gang of at least four hooded individuals burst into jewellery shop Carretero, located in the Madrid Sur shopping centre, opposite the Madrid Assembly, in Puente de Vallecas. This is the third known case in less than a week.
ABC reports that all these events fall within a period of new increases in the price of gold on the international metals market. Group XIII of the Judicial Police Brigade of the Superior Command of Madrid is investigating the incidents. It is too early to determine whether the three robberies are related to one another.
