The mother of the two murdered sisters and grandmother of the young boy spoke with visible pain. She recounted how their existence had been turned upside down since the tragedy, now living in the memory of the deceased. Addressing the accused, she expressed her complete lack of compassion and wished that he would never regain his freedom, as her entire family would now serve a life sentence.
Members of the siblings took turns describing the devastating impact of the deaths. The eldest spoke of her childhood marked by family placements to emphasise that personal difficulties could not excuse such crimes. The younger sister, in tears, recalled the humiliations suffered by the three-year-old child at the hands of the man who should have protected him. The youngest sister pleaded with the man to lift his eyes and justify his hatred.
During these exchanges, the defendant kept his gaze fixed on the ground. When questioned about his past romantic relationships, he replied that he did not believe he had experienced love. He nonetheless claimed to feel remorse, while specifying that he had acted with complete lucidity. The magistrate presiding over the hearing attempted in vain to obtain elements of understanding, but the accused took refuge behind memory gaps which he attributed to his medication.
Following treatment since a diagnosis of bipolar disorder established in 2018, he indicated that his personal instabilities had dominated that fatal evening. He first struck his partner to death, then asphyxiated their son, before attacking her sister. According to his account, a dispute concerning his daughter from a previous union caused the situation to escalate. He also let slip that a greater number of people present at the scene would have resulted in more victims.
The younger brother of the two sisters, aged 27, shared his own journey since the tragedy. He admitted to going to the hospital with a sharp weapon after the events, whilst the killer was being treated there following a road accident. Another half-brother maintained that the second female victim had been targeted because she had revealed to her sister the true nature of the defendant.
The thirty-something woman working as a psychologist maintained close ties with her elder sister, who was employed in the energy sector. The youngest member of the siblings reported that the psychologist had already been fearful for her sister's future with this man.
As the final decision approached, the defendant concluded by stating that he had always had a premonition of imprisonment, without understanding the reason, before adding that the cause was now clear: he had taken the life of three human beings.
