The Lyon prosecution announced on Monday 21 September to Agence France-Presse the opening of a murder investigation following the discovery of a body in the Rhône. According to ouest-france.fr, the body was found on Saturday late in the afternoon, partially submerged near a bridge connecting Villeurbanne to Caluire-et-Cuire, two communes bordering Lyon.
A police source confirmed to the AFP that the victim's feet and hands were tied. According to the local newspaper Le Progrès, it is believed to be a man in his forties. Around fifteen firefighters were mobilised, along with emergency services and law enforcement, to extract the body from the water.
On the riverbank, investigators found a scooter believed to belong to the victim, as well as his identity documents, the police source specified.
The investigation has been handed over to the Interdepartmental Directorate of the National Police (DIPN). The investigations and medical-legal examinations ordered by the prosecution "aim to clarify the circumstances and exact causes of this death", particularly whether it is "the result of intervention by a third party".
