It all began the evening before, when a 19-year-old motorcyclist was injured in a collision involving a police vehicle. The accident quickly sparked tensions in the neighbourhood.
"I heard a loud crash, then a scream. The young motorcyclist had just been hit by the police. I called the fire service," testified a 47-year-old resident. She described the rapid escalation of tensions: "Very quickly, dozens of people rushed to him, people were angry at the police. Everyone was shouting, it was getting bigger and bigger."
The same resident recounted how a young man next to her grabbed a concrete block, which he smashed on the ground, intending to throw it at the police. "I was telling him 'stop', he eventually listened to me. Others were also trying to calm things down," she added.
As the night went on, the situation descended into actual rioting: vehicles were set on fire, police officers and gendarmes were injured, and several cases of resisting orders were reported, according to information relayed by various media outlets including Le Monde and Le Figaro.
The next morning, once the police and rioters had left, elected officials and residents saw the extent of the damage in the neighbourhood. The municipality of Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, near Tours, thus experienced one of the most violent nights in its recent history.
