Footballer Achraf Hakimi referred to assize court for rape

Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi, who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain, will be tried before an assize court in France. The Versailles appeal court confirmed on Friday the order committing him for trial on rape charges, according to Tages-Anzeiger.

The 27-year-old Moroccan international is the subject of a complaint filed in March 2023 by a 24-year-old woman. She claims to have been raped at the player's home, located in a commune in the Paris region. The prosecution requested that the footballer be committed for trial before the assize court, a recommendation followed by the investigating judge in February.

Hakimi filed an appeal against this decision. The appeal court rejected it, finding that the evidence gathered during the investigation was sufficient to justify a trial. The date of the hearing has not yet been set.

The accused denies the allegations. On X, he stated that his case would have been dismissed without further action if he were not a well-known figure. He says he has sometimes become an easy target. His lawyer, for her part, welcomed the appeal court's decision, expressing hope that this trial may also help other women.

This judicial decision came just hours before the match between Morocco and Scotland in the World Cup football tournament.
