Murder of an octogenarian in Grau-du-Roi: 15-year-old pupil taken for questioning
An 86-year-old woman was found dead on a path in Grau-du-Roi, in the Gard department, after suffering multiple knife wounds. The main suspect is a 15-year-old adolescent, residing in the same seaside resort, who was taken into police custody on Wednesday 17 June.
The octogenarian regularly stayed at a campsite in the municipality. Her body was discovered on a coastal path where she had been violently attacked. According to initial police findings, there appeared to be no connection between the young suspect and his victim. During his period in custody, the minor reportedly admitted to being responsible for the crime.
Police officers are carefully examining the young man's digital activity in the hours preceding the tragedy. He reportedly visited websites promoting violence against animals. Bruno Bartocetti, secretary-general of the South Zone Police Unit, specified that the adolescent apparently belonged to online groups where cruelty towards animals is normalised. Such content, increasingly prevalent on social media, is a major cause of concern for police services.
The suspect attended a school in the area. A psychological support team was set up within the secondary school to help classmates and their parents come to terms with the shock. Several families expressed their astonishment, the adolescent having never previously been subject to any reports. He was to be presented before an investigating magistrate on Thursday 18 June.
