On 9 April 2024, Zakaria Tabti lost his life from a knife blow in the Monnaie district of Romans-sur-Isère, whilst attempting to intervene in a fight. His death had provoked deep emotion, and statements from those accused had been awaited for over two years.
Among the voices heard at the hearing was that of Mathieu, 17 years old, the friend on whose behalf Zakaria had sought to stop the brawl. An apprentice panel beater and shuttled between foster homes since the incident, the young man confided that he was eaten up by guilt.
The main accused, for his part, acknowledged his responsibility in terms reported by ledauphine.com: "That evening, I lost control," also declaring that he had had "no reason" to attack the victim.
