The court in Lucca has issued a final judgment against a 65-year-old businesswoman, sentencing her to 18 years' imprisonment. The incident dates back to the night of 8 September 2024, when the defendant hit and killed a 52-year-old man in Viareggio.
On the evening in question, the woman had just been robbed of her bag, which contained all her documents and personal belongings. Rather than contact the authorities, she decided to chase the thief with her own vehicle. Once she had caught up with the criminal, who was walking on the roadside, she struck him repeatedly with the car.
According to the results of the autopsy, the first impact proved fatal. The person struck died on the spot, left on the ground without the perpetrator seeking help.
During the trial, which lasted approximately twenty-four months, the defendant stated that she had not intended to cause death: "My intention was only to stop him and make him fall to the ground to retrieve what was mine." She recounted that she had returned home believing the thief was "at most injured" and that she had seen him "trying to get up."
The public prosecutors maintained throughout that the woman was fully aware of the consequences of her actions. They defined the act as a "form of private justice" and requested the maximum penalty, invoking a life sentence on account of multiple aggravating circumstances.
During the two years of trial proceedings, the woman remained under house arrest for almost the entire time.
