Google News IT — Crime reports details of a femicide that occurred on Thursday 4 September in the Florence area, at the height of Barberino di Mugello: Lorena Isceri, 46, originally from Lecce, was killed by her ex-boyfriend Federico Vella, 36, from Florence, who threw her from an overpass on the A1 Panoramica motorway from a height of more than 40 metres, before taking his own life in front of officers from the motorway police.
There are no records of previous complaints or legal actions. Investigators from the Florence mobile squad, led by Domenico Balsamo and coordinated by duty prosecutor Antonio Natale, spoke from the outset of premeditated violence.
The ambush in the Rifredi garage
According to police reconstruction, Vella — a manager at a car rental company — had hidden in the garage of the Rifredi district, a working-class area of Florence, where Isceri regularly parked her SUV. The woman worked at a marketing firm for a veterinary company. The couple had experienced a separation: she had left him, and he had not accepted the break-up.
As soon as Isceri parked the vehicle, Vella appeared suddenly. He reportedly attacked her and probably stunned her, then tied her legs with cable ties and immobilised her hands in front of her body. He then threw her into the boot of the SUV along with her rucksack, which contained her mobile phone.
The call to 112: twenty minutes from the boot
Recovered from the shock, Isceri found the mobile phone in her rucksack, unlocked it and began calling. First her mother, then a friend: in both cases the line dropped. She finally managed to contact 112. The operations room of the Florence Questura immediately understood the gravity of the situation and gathered the first information: the identity of the woman, that of the attacker, the vehicle they were travelling in, the number plate, any possible presence of weapons. The call lasted approximately twenty minutes, then the line was cut off.
The police used geolocation on the mobile phone, establishing that the vehicle was at that moment on the A1 motorway. Cross-referencing with images from security cameras — which had already recorded the number plate and model of the SUV — allowed motorway police to confirm the position of the vehicle and to begin pursuit.
The overpass, the patrol and the throw into the void
A patrol spotted the SUV stationary on the overpass. Shortly before, Vella had opened the boot. "What are you doing?" he reportedly said to Isceri, who was still holding her mobile phone in her hand: the phrase was recorded by the operations centre. At that point the man threw the woman into the void, from a height of more than 40 metres.
Officers, who arrived at the scene with their bodycam activated, found Vella still on the overpass. "What have you done?" they asked him. "She cheated on me, she treated me badly, she attacked me," the man reportedly replied, before throwing himself into the void in turn.
The 118 emergency service, which arrived a few minutes later, could only confirm the death of both. The overpass is on the A1 Panoramica, in the stretch that remained closed for hours between the junction with the A1 Direttissima and Roncobilaccio — the same spot where years ago three workers died in a work accident.
Investigation: no previous record, autopsy ordered
The mobile squad began initial investigations. No police record emerges against Vella nor any complaint filed by the victim against him. The Public Prosecutor's Office ordered the transfer of both bodies to Careggi hospital, where they will be subjected to autopsy and toxicological examination.
Police searched the homes of both individuals and seized their respective mobile phones. Once the postal police manage to access the devices, the objective will be to reconstruct with maximum precision the sequence of events and what was going through the man's mind in the hours preceding the crime.
