Italian law enforcement has confiscated property valued at over 200 million euros. These assets belonged to the prominent Sicilian mafia leader Matteo Messina Denaro, who died several years ago after being captured in 2023 in Palermo, following three decades on the run.
According to information released by the Financial Guard, the Cosa Nostra leader had accumulated an enormous fortune since the 1980s, primarily through illegal drug trafficking. The money and investments had been dispersed across various locations in Europe and other parts of the world.
The confiscation operation represents a further blow to the criminal legacy of one of the most wanted bosses in Italian history. Investigations into Messina Denaro's financial activities continued even after his death, with the aim of depriving the mafia organisation of resources accumulated illegally.
