Polish judiciary claims to have identified a Moroccan citizen as the alleged perpetrator of the murder of a Polish soldier who died in June 2024 after being stabbed at the border barrier between Poland and Belarus.
According to a statement from the prosecutor's office in Warsaw, the suspect is Mohamed Addamrou. Polish authorities believe he is currently on Belarusian territory and have initiated an extradition procedure.
The incident occurred on 28 May 2024 in Dubiczany Cerkiewne, a town located near the Belarusian border. The Regional Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw states that the accused was on the other side of the border barrier at the time of the act. He allegedly inflicted a knife wound on Sergeant Mateusz Sitko, a soldier of the 1st Warsaw Armoured Brigade on active duty.
The severely wounded soldier died on 6 June 2024 at the Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw.
The investigation, conducted over two years, resulted in questioning more than 140 witnesses in Poland and abroad. On the basis of the evidence gathered, Polish investigators claim to have established the suspect's identity.
On 21 July 2025, the prosecutor's office in Warsaw charged Mohamed Addamrou with murder. A red notice and a European arrest warrant were issued, as the suspect was not on Polish territory at the time of the incident and his place of residence in Poland is unknown.
The investigation revealed that the suspect is in Belarus. On 2 December 2025, the prosecutor's office in Warsaw submitted a request to Minsk for temporary arrest and extradition.
The investigation was suspended on 22 May 2026 due to a persistent procedural obstacle related to the suspect's presence outside Poland and the ongoing extradition procedure with Belarusian authorities.
The prosecutor's office in Warsaw assures that all Polish state services remain ready to locate the suspect and bring him before a court.
