Construction workers made a shocking discovery this week during earthwork operations on the driveway to a detached house in the village of Lutoryż near Rzeszów in eastern Poland. Using an excavator, they uncovered the remains of at least 29 unborn children as well as medical waste, including paraffin blocks for storing tissue and microscope slides.

According to the website Novinky.cz, prosecutor Krzysztof Ciechanowski reported that among the items found were a human foetus and other remains which could have been human foetuses in early stages of development or their fragments. Medical specialists sent to the site confirmed that the secured remains were the remains of human foetuses.

Police officers detained on Friday a 57-year-old pathologist, Magdalena H., who had sold the property to the young couple several months earlier. The woman had carried out examinations for hospitals and various state institutions. Investigators suspect that she subsequently, in violation of regulations, burned the remains in her garden and buried them on her plot. The motive may have been a desire to save money.

The detained woman currently works in Rzeszów. She knew that police were interested in her but did not attempt to hide from them. According to prosecutors, she faces up to 12 years imprisonment for the desecration of human remains and improper handling of hazardous waste.

Investigators are continuing work at the site. A water tanker has been brought to Lutoryż, and police are also conducting a thorough examination of the sewerage system on the property. The new owners purchased the house approximately six months ago. Neighbours have little memory of the previous owner, with some describing her as "somewhat odd".
