Over a tonne of heroin seized at Gdańsk port. CBŚP and KAS arrest three people
At Gdańsk port, officers from the CBŚP and customs officials seized heroin weighing over one thousand kilograms. The street value of the substance reaches nearly 220 million zloty. Three Polish citizens were arrested in connection with the affair.
Information about the suspicious consignment was provided by British partners from HM Revenue & Customs. Their tip drew the attention of Polish authorities to four containers transported from the Middle East.
In late March, a detailed inspection of the transport units was conducted. Officially, they were to contain decorative bricks. An X-ray scanner search and specialist dog inspection, however, revealed the presence of entirely different cargo. Hidden under the false load were packages filled with heroin. Preliminary tests using a testing kit confirmed the type of substance.
In mid-May, officers arrested three people – two men and one woman aged between 33 and 43 years old. The Regional Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk brought charges against them for attempted smuggling of significant quantities of narcotic substances. The court ordered detention on remand for two of the suspects.
The proceedings are in an initial phase. Authorities do not exclude further arrests.
