A 60-year-old man was arrested in Sertã, a municipality in Castelo Branco district, by the Judicial Police (PJ), accused of killing and robbing an 87-year-old man in the Portuguese capital in April last year. The news was made public by the PJ this Wednesday.
According to a statement from the security force, the detainee is considered "strongly suspected" of aggravated homicide and robbery. The victim's body was found at his home, where he lived alone, already in an advanced state of decomposition. The octogenarian had his limbs bound and showed signs of brutal assault.
Authorities determined that the victim was known to carry large sums of cash, which appears to have attracted the assailant's interest. Following investigative work, PJ inspectors were able to track the presumed culprit to Sertã, the location to which he had moved after the incident.
The detainee, who has already served sentences for violent robberies against elderly people, assumed responsibility for the crime. He explained that he was facing financial difficulties caused by a gambling dependency, worsened by having lost thousands of euros on betting sites on the eve of the attack.
The case will now proceed to the Criminal Investigation Court in Lisbon, where the defendant will be heard in his initial judicial interrogation and measures of restraint will be set. The investigation of the case is being handled by the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP) of the capital.
