Aveiro Court handed down a four-year sentence, suspended for five years, to a 21-year-old man detained on the IP3 with almost six kilograms of cannabis resin.

A 21-year-old man was convicted on Wednesday by Aveiro Court to a four-year prison sentence, the execution of which was suspended for five years, for a drug trafficking offence.
The young man was stopped on 6 June 2025, at around 21:30, whilst driving on the IP3 towards Coimbra. Judicial Police officers stopped the vehicle he was driving and, during a thorough search, discovered 5.7 kilograms of cannabis resin and three grams of plant leaves. The amount seized is equivalent to more than 35,000 individual doses.
Before the court, the defendant admitted that he had agreed to transport the substances between Spain and Portugal on behalf of a stranger, describing himself as a simple "drug mule". The young man stated that he would have received one thousand euros for the task and that the business was not his own.
As justification for his behaviour, the defendant cited economic difficulties related to a gambling addiction, expressing remorse and asking for an opportunity to make a fresh start.
The magistrate who presided over the trial found all the facts of the Public Prosecutor's charges proved, except for the intention to sell the drug to consumers and the carrying out of previous transports.
The conviction reflected the special regime for young offenders, since the defendant was only 20 years old when the facts occurred. The court also ordered his immediate release, as he had been serving home detention.
