United States President Donald Trump announced on Friday that his country's armed forces killed Niño Guerrero, the alleged top leader of the Venezuelan criminal gang known as Tren de Aragua, in an air strike carried out on Venezuelan territory.
According to the president's statements, the military operation targeted Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, alias "Niño Guerrero", who was sought by authorities in several countries for his alleged links to drug trafficking, contract killing, extortion and human trafficking. The Venezuelan government has not issued any official response to the bombing so far.
Tren de Aragua is a criminal organisation that emerged in the Venezuelan state of Aragua, specifically within the country's prisons, and has expanded throughout Latin America and the United States in recent years. The gang has been linked with various violent crimes, including homicides, kidnappings and smuggling operations.
Several countries, including the United States and Colombia, had included members of this organisation on their lists of wanted persons. The Trump administration had previously designated the group as a threat to national security.
The military operation marks an escalation in United States policy against transnational organised crime and represents one of the most significant blows against a Latin American criminal gang in recent years.
