The top boss of the dangerous Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, nicknamed Niño Guerrero, was killed in a military operation carried out jointly by forces from the United States and Venezuela in the South American country's territory. The news was first announced by Donald Trump via a message on Truth Social; subsequently, officials from the Caracas government confirmed the fact.
The deceased was named Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores. According to reports from the newspaper El País, the operation that ended his life was carried out by troops of the local army several days ago in a border area of southeastern Venezuela bordering Brazil and Guyana. Trump himself distributed aerial images showing a structure with a green covering that disappears engulfed in smoke after a detonation.
The organisation commanded by Guerrero had previously been designated as a terrorist entity by the White House. The dead man himself accumulated an extensive criminal record: in 2018, courts in his native country sentenced him to seventeen years imprisonment for homicides, drug trafficking, illegal possession of firearms and other offences. Despite being imprisoned in Tocorón penal institution—located in the northern region—he maintained control of criminal activities inside and outside Venezuela. When authorities conducted large-scale raids on that prison in September 2023, the boss had already escaped along with numerous inmates.
At the same time, United States justice formally accused him of crimes including murders, kidnappings, extortion and drug trafficking. Washington's diplomacy went so far as to offer five million dollars to anyone providing useful information to locate him.
The occupant of the White House asserted that, under his administration, the pursuit of "brutal killers and drug lords" will continue wherever they hide, with no safe havens for them either in Venezuela or anywhere else on the planet.
