Portarlington man charged with iron bar assault outside Railway Bar

Portarlington man remanded on bail over alleged iron bar attack

A Portarlington man has been remanded on continuing bail after appearing before Portlaoise District Court on charges of assault and possession of an iron bar, laois-nationalist.ie reports.

Peter Cassidy (45), of St Joseph's Terrace, Portarlington, faces charges arising from an incident on 4 April at the Railway Bar, Station Road, Portarlington. He is accused of possessing an iron bar and of assault causing harm on that date.

Garda Sgt JJ Kirby told the court that at approximately 10pm, a van pulled up outside the pub while the alleged injured party was seated outside having a drink. Cassidy allegedly stepped out of the vehicle carrying an iron bar and struck the man on the leg. Sgt Kirby said CCTV footage from the bar captured the alleged assault.

Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick noted that no medical report had been placed before the court, adding that "it seems the alleged injured party didn't require medical attention." She urged Judge Andrew Gubbins to accept jurisdiction and deal with the matter at district court level, which he agreed to do.

Ms Fitzpatrick also requested that all evidence gardaí intend to rely on in the prosecution be disclosed to her, to allow Cassidy to determine how he would plead.

Judge Gubbins remanded the accused on continuing bail to the 2 November sitting of Portlaoise District Court.
