Bus stolen and driven into vehicles in Telford after driver assaulted, man arrested

A man has been arrested after a bus was stolen in Telford, driven on the wrong side of the road and crashed into multiple vehicles. The bus driver suffered minor injuries.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and dangerous driving after a bus was stolen in Telford and driven into several vehicles, itv.com reports.

West Mercia Police said officers were called at around 6.37pm on Friday to Court Street in Madeley, following reports that a bus driver had been assaulted and thrown from his vehicle.

The stolen bus was then driven along Park Way towards the High Street, travelling on the wrong side of the road and colliding with multiple vehicles before it was brought to a stop. The suspect was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody while inquiries continue.

Paramedics treated the bus driver for minor injuries at the scene. No other injuries are believed to have been sustained.

Superintendent Edward Hancox, responsible for local policing in Telford, described the event as an "alarming incident" and said officers — including armed officers deployed from Malinsgate Police Station — had made the arrest within ten minutes of the first call being received.

"We understand how concerning this incident will have been for people in Madeley and the wider Telford community," Hancox said. "A man remains in police custody while we work to fully understand the circumstances of what happened."

Hancox thanked members of the public who came to the driver's aid following what he called "a distressing incident", and also expressed gratitude to those who had already provided footage or information to police.

"Thankfully, the bus driver did not suffer serious injuries," he added. "The care and concern shown by the community has been greatly appreciated."

Detectives are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or captured footage — from dashcams, CCTV, mobile phones or doorbell cameras — in the Court Street, Park Way or High Street areas at the time to come forward.
