Telford bus stolen and driven into traffic after driver assault, man arrested

A man in his 20s has been arrested after a bus was stolen in Telford and driven into multiple vehicles following an alleged assault on its driver.

A bus was seized and driven into several vehicles in Telford on Friday evening after its driver was allegedly assaulted and forced out of the vehicle, The Independent reports.

West Mercia Police said officers were called at around 6.37pm to Court Street in Madeley, following reports of an assault on a bus driver. The bus was subsequently driven along Park Way towards the High Street — on the wrong side of the road — before colliding with multiple vehicles.

A man in his 20s was arrested when the bus was eventually brought to a stop. He remains in police custody on suspicion of robbery and dangerous driving while inquiries continue.

The bus driver was treated for minor injuries by paramedics. No other injuries are believed to have been sustained.

Detective Sergeant Taigh Lannie described the event as an "alarming incident" and sought to reassure the public. "Officers responded quickly and a man has been arrested and remains in police custody," Lannie said.

Footage of the alleged incident has circulated widely on social media. Detectives are appealing for witnesses who were in the Court Street, Park Way or High Street areas at the time and may hold relevant recordings — including dashcam, CCTV, mobile phone or doorbell footage — to check their devices and contact police.
